The national program for support and development of the Ukrainian language has to be adopted by the end of cadence of the present Parliament. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn said this on Rada TV Channel on Friday.
V. Lytvyn reminded that a number of bills on the procedure of using languages in Ukraine have been registered at the Verkhovna Rada. The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada is the author of one of them. The Head of the Parliament noted that if his proposals had been taken into consideration while preparing the current language bill for consideration, many problems would have been avoided.
“There are two questions: first, adoption of the law under working title “On the procedure of language use in Ukraine and on the status of the Ukrainian language”; and second, on the state program to support the development of the Ukrainian language,” said V. Lytvyn. “It would be good to adopt this program before the end of cadence of the present Verkhovna Rada and approve by consolidated voting that we fight for the Ukrainian language not just in word, but by taking practical decisions.”
The Head of the Parliament said that intensive financing of the program this and next year is the most important factor.
Giving his prognosis concerning consideration of the bills pertaining to the language law, V. Lytvyn expressed the opinion that “there will the process; there will be fight and confrontation, especially as initiated by those who do not know any language and therefore are trying to be the legislators on these issues.”
